Maine

Maine is the northeasternmost state in the country, a New England state with a long Atlantic Coast and a single land border with another U.S. state, New Hampshire to the southwest, plus a lengthy border with Canada’s Quebec and New Brunswick to the north and east.

Maine tourism materials commonly list eight regions: Aroostook County, Downeast & Acadia, Greater Portland & Casco Bay, Kennebec Valley, Maine Beaches, Maine Highlands, Maine Lakes & Mountains, and MidCoast & Islands.

Maine’s Atlantic coastline is 228 miles as the crow flies, but closer to 3,500 miles when every cove, island, and inlet is traced. It is the state’s signature feature, defined by granite headlands, tidal rivers, lobster wharves, and working fishing villages. Inland, Maine is a lake state of the first order: Sebago Lake, Moosehead Lake, Rangeley Lakes, and hundreds of smaller ponds are central to fishing, paddling, and summer cabin culture across the state. Major draws include Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Portland Head Light, the Appalachian Trail’s northern terminus on Mount Katahdin, Old Orchard Beach, and the seafood culture of the coast.

The best time to visit is late June through early October, with peak summer for coastal towns and late September through mid-October for fall foliage in the interior.
