Oak Mountain State Park covers 11,861 acres of forested ridgeline south of Birmingham, making it the largest state park in Alabama. The park sits within the Appalachian foothills, where parallel ridges rise above hardwood hollows and a chain of lakes winds through the valleys below. Its scale and variety set it apart from smaller parks in the region, offering everything from easy lakeside walks to demanding backcountry routes, all within 30 minutes of a major city.

Trails

More than 100 miles of trails cross Oak Mountain, drawing hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and trail runners throughout the year. Routes range from the gentle Lake Trail around Double Oak Lake to the steep Peavine Falls Trail and the moderately challenging King’s Chair Loop, which climbs to one of the park’s best-known overlooks. Peavine Falls itself drops roughly 65 feet over a sandstone ledge and is one of the most visited spots in the park. Mountain bikers have an extensive trail network, and the trail system is well-regarded enough to host regional competitions. Signage is generally reliable, though carrying a downloaded map is a good habit on longer loops where junctions come quickly.

Fishing and Lake Recreation

Seven lakes sit inside the park boundaries, with six open to public fishing. Double Oak, Lunker, Beaver, Catfish, Demopolis, and Belcher lakes are open to anglers, while Lake Tranquility is reserved for cabin guests. Anglers commonly catch largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and crappie, and fishing is available to day visitors and campers alike on the public lakes. A valid Alabama fishing license is required for residents ages 16 to 64 and nonresidents 16 and older. The lakes also support kayaking and canoeing, and rentals are available on site when seasonal operators are open. Swimming beaches are available at Double Oak Lake and Beaver Lake, both swim-at-your-own-risk areas with no lifeguard on duty. These water features give the park a resort-like range of activities that complements the trail system.

Camping

Oak Mountain offers several camping options suited to different preferences. The developed campground includes sites with water and electrical hookups, clean bathhouse facilities, and easy access to the lake and main trailheads. For those who want more solitude, backcountry campsites are available deeper in the park and require a short hike to reach. A group camp area accommodates larger parties such as scouts, church groups, school organizations, and other groups. Reservations are recommended on weekends from spring through fall. The Alabama State Parks reservation system handles bookings online.

Pet Policy

Leashed pets are welcome throughout most of the park, including on trails and in the campground. The leash must be no longer than six feet. Pets are not allowed in the swimming beach area or inside any park buildings. Owners are expected to clean up after their animals. Given the trail volume and the number of families with children visiting on weekends, keeping dogs under close control is both a rule and a practical courtesy.

Practical Information

Oak Mountain State Park is located at 200 Terrace Drive in Pelham, Alabama, off Alabama Highway 119, roughly 15 miles south of downtown Birmingham. Take exit 246 from Interstate 65 and follow the signs on Alabama Highway 119 to the main park entrance. A day-use fee is charged per person, with reduced rates for children and seniors and free admission for ages 3 and under and for active, retired, and veteran military. Camping fees vary by date, availability, and site type. The park is open year-round from 7 a.m. until sunset, though some facilities, including boat rentals and watersports, operate seasonally. Fall and spring bring the most comfortable hiking conditions, and weekends can be busy. Summer weekdays may be quieter, though heat and humidity can be significant. The park office can be reached by phone for current fee schedules and facility status.
